    Troop News
    Pilot Knob Battle Reenactment &
    Taum Sauk Mountain Campout
    September 26-28, 2014

Troop 161 had a great weekend in Pilot Knob, MO attending the Reenactment at Fort Davidson for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War Battle of Pilot Knob. Friday night the Troop arrived around 7:30 pm and Mr. Menteer had most of our campsite already assembled. The evening was very nice low 60’s as we sat around the campfire and looked Northward at the many stars that lit the evening.

We woke up around 7:00 am and began cooking breakfast. A HUGE shout out goes to Mrs. Butler and her hens who provided us 4 dozen fresh eggs from her chicken coop………………they were delicious as we used them to prepare one of Troops 161 favorite breakfast dishes; Shipwreck. Right before we began to devour our breakfast Mr. Cain drove down for the weekend and joined us………………….as you may recall his brother Paul Cain was involved as one of the Union Soldiers who was part of the Missouri 8th infantry.

Once we finished breakfast we began our trip to Pilot Knob: those who were in attendance: Mr. DiMercurio, Mr. Cain, Mr. Menteer, Mr. Kriegshauser, Max. K., Daniel B., Jon F., Alan S., Andrew S., and Brandon D.

As we made our way around the State Historic Site we were pleasantly greeted by General Sterling Price of the Confederate Army; General Price described to us why and what happened during the battle of Pilot Knob; many of the confederate soldiers had nothing but the clothes on their back, many without shoes and waiting till their comrades or a Union soldier was killed or injured to take the supplies off their bodies and begin to fight.

At 1:00pm the Battle of Pilot Knob began, and for about two hours the reenactment showed the bloody battle and how close the Confederates were to seizing Fort Davidson; thousands died during that battle and a mass grave was formed and still is there honoring those who lost their lives during this battle.

After the battle the boys and leaders went to the vendor tents where they saw many of the uniforms and equipment that the solders used; they even sampled and drank homemade Root beer, which seemed to be a hit.

We learned about many of the struggles that both the Union and Confederate armies had to face such as battle wounds, hunger, and uncertainty of whether they would live or die. We got to see firsthand how these soldiers lived in canvas tents, sleeping on straw to stay warm, but all proud and brave to fight for their common causes.
The Troop attended 5:30 pm mass at St. Marie Du Lac in Ironton, MO; it was nice to be recognized by the attending priest and congregation. We then returned to camp and prepared dinner that consisted of BBQ chicken breast, BBQ beans, salad, and mac’ n cheese. After dinner, the troop sat around the fire and recalled many of the cool things we saw that day.

On Sunday the Troop arose around 7:00am and began to break down camp, after breakfast a patrol line was formed to make sure the area was left as we found it; following the Leave No Trace policy.
