All 161 scouts from St. Simon the Apostle were invited to attend the Crew's "Intro to Backpacking" hike. The plan was to hike at Don Robinson State Park, but a problem with the park's entrance gate prevented any vehicle access. After waiting about an hour and a half, the group left and went to LaBarque Creek Conservation Area, only a few miles away. The LaBarque Creek trail is 3 miles long and moderately difficult. The day's hike turned out to be beautiful once we got started. All had a great time.

Scout Families enjoyed hiking the Rock Quarry Trail at Rockwoods Reservation, a 1,843 acre state forest and wildlife conservation area. The Rock Quarry Trail is 2.2 miles, moderately rugged and has a overall elevation difference of about 250 feet.

Rockwoods Reservation was established in 1938, one year after the Missouri Department of Conservation was created, making it one of Missouri's oldest conservation properties. Rockwoods has a history of extensive rock quarrying and most of the forest was previously clear cut to provide firewood for the quarry's eleven kilns.

Operation Cleanstream 2019 (Part 2) Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

    Operation Cleanstream 2019 (Part 2)
    Ozark Outdoors River Resort
    August 25, 2019

We had just completed Operation Cleansteam (Part 1), June 2 on our regular section starting at Walker's Ford. As we were departing for home, Tera Bass at Ozark Outdoors asked if we could return on August 25. This was to participate in a smaller scale river cleanup and target an area where the outfitter hosts one of their larger commercial float events each year.

Of course we said yes! The venture crew agreed to assist, since most were too busy on June 2 preparing for the Philmont Trek. Our Crew Commissioner was also able to attend with his son and 2 grandsons.

We drove through some heavy rain on the way there. Once at Ozark Outdoors we got everyone registered, distributed gloves, T-shirts and trash bags as usual.
But this day was a little different in that we were recognizing our 10 year anniversary of our scouts participation in Operation Cleanstream at Ozark Outdoors. To celebrate we brought 2 large trays of cupcakes to share with our scouts and our friends at Ozark Outdoors.

Also a little different was the section of river that we floated. This 5 mile float starts at the Primitive Campground in the Huzzah Conservation Area, ends at Ozark Outdoors and includes segments of Courtois Creek, Huzzah Creek and the Meramec River. See attached map for additional info. It was still raining for the first 30 minutes or so of the float, but we fortunately enjoyed dry weather the rest of the day.

We collected a rather modest amount of trash, but nothing like we usually do. No tires, appliances, barrels, or furniture for example. We did pick up beverage cans, fireworks, jello shot cups and dozens of New Orleans style bead necklaces.

Thanks to all that attended this special cleanup. Thanks again to the Open Space Council & Caitlin Zera, the Missouri Stream Team Program, our friends Bear & Tera Bass and their great staff at Ozark Outdoors including our awesome bus driver Donald!

Let's do this again next year!

This day 10 years ago marked the first time Troop 161 scouts participated in Operation Cleanstream on the Upper Meramec River! Troop 161 and Venture Crew 2161 scouts have picked up trash on this section of river every year for the last 10 years!
