    7 Troop 161 scouts and 7 leaders/parents joined an estimated 4000 area Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturers to decorate the 183,000 graves at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery with an American Flag during the 62nd annual Memorial Day “Good Turn.” The event is hosted by Gravois Trail District.     The Philmont Blue Crew backpacked this weekend on the Three Notch Trail at S-F Scout Ranch. Arriving Friday the group spent a soggy night in their tents at the camporee field. Saturday morning they backpacked from the camporee field around the south side of Lake Nims to the West Loop of the 3 Notch Trail hiking about 4 miles to Castle Rock. Saturday’s weather was much better. At Castle Rock all the gear was laid out and dried. Saturday night the crew slept under the stars on Castle Rock. On Sunday the crew backpacked about 6 miles on the 3 Notch Trail and returned to the camporee field coming around the north side of Lake Nims. Photos provided by Andy Sandroni.     Five of our scouts and 4 adult leaders spent the weekend camping at VFW Post 3777 in Festus, Mo. This was the 2nd year our scouts helped the VFW Post by assisting in a fishing program designed for disabled veterans. (Click on read more below for more photos and text.)

    The Philmont Blue Crew took a training hike on the Taum Sauk section of the Ozark Trail. This section of the Taum Sauk Trail features the highest point in Missouri, Mina Sauk Falls, the Devil’s Tollgate and Taum Sauk Creek. Taum Sauk Mountain, the tallest of the St. Francois Mountains, is composed mainly of igneous porphyry. This once molten rock was formed during the Precambrian Era over a billion years ago making it one of the oldest exposures of igneous rock in North America.
