All 161 scouts from St. Simon the Apostle were invited to attend the Crew's "Intro to Backpacking" hike. The plan was to hike at Don Robinson State Park, but a problem with the park's entrance gate prevented any vehicle access. After waiting about an hour and a half, the group left and went to LaBarque Creek Conservation Area, only a few miles away. The LaBarque Creek trail is 3 miles long and moderately difficult. The day's hike turned out to be beautiful once we got started. All had a great time.

Scout Families enjoyed hiking the Rock Quarry Trail at Rockwoods Reservation, a 1,843 acre state forest and wildlife conservation area. The Rock Quarry Trail is 2.2 miles, moderately rugged and has a overall elevation difference of about 250 feet.
Rockwoods Reservation was established in 1938, one year after the Missouri Department of Conservation was created, making it one of Missouri's oldest conservation properties. Rockwoods has a history of extensive rock quarrying and most of the forest was previously clear cut to provide firewood for the quarry's eleven kilns.

Crew / Pack Hike
Don Robinson State Park
March 16, 2019
St. Simon's (Boy Scout) Venture Crew 2161 treated Pack 161 and families to an introduction to trail hiking and backpacking at Missouri's Don Robinson State Park. Crew president Christine S. led our group of 25 from the trail head to the box canyon area, passing small waterfalls, a natural bridge and stepping across several small creeks. We stopped in the canyon area to explore a little and have a snack. Backpack stoves were used to prepare freeze dried beef stroganoff, hot chocolate and Jiffy Pop popcorn. The crew also brought chocolate chip cereal bars, Slim Jims, raisins and peanuts to share. The day was beautiful and all went very well. Several families said that they would return. Thanks to the Cub Scouts and their families for participating. Thanks to our Crew and advisers for their leadership and also Cub Scoutmaster Ed Koeller for suggesting this outing.

New Year's Day Hike
River Scene Trail
Castlewood State Park
January 1, 2019
Crew 2161 and their families welcomed the new year with the Annual New Year's Day Hike at Castlewood State Park.
The Crew hiked about 2 1/2 miles on the River Scene Trail starting at the Trailhead near the picnic shelter and then climbing the ridge about 200 feet above the river. The trail then descends to the river bottom where it follows the railroad back to the connector trail to the park access road. The weather was overcast, about a constant 35 degrees with a wind chill in the mid twenties. For more photos of the 2019 New Year's Day Hike click on "Read More" below.
