Sandstone Canyon Trail Hike
Don Robinson State Park
Cedar Hill, MO
January 13, 2018

Thanks to everyone who attended the Sandstone Canyon Trail Hike at Don Robinson State Park. The day was partly sunny with temperatures that held in the teens and twenties.

Don Robinson State Park is a new 818 acre State Park that opened to the public in 2017. The area is in the upper watershed of the high quality stream Labarque Creek and features beautiful sandstone box canyons, cliffs, glades, surrounded by upland and bottomland forests. It was Don Robinson's wish that upon his death (2012) that his property be donated to the Missouri Park System to be enjoyed by all visitors.

Blackberry Hollow Day Hike
Beaumont Reservation
High Ridge, MO
January 6, 2018

Crew 2161 folks braved day temperatures between 4 and 22 degrees on an otherwise beautiful winter day along the 5.2 mile Blackberry Hollow (Red) Trail at Beaumont Reservation. We saw no others during the 5 hours we spent on the trail, but we did see several deer, a rafter of about 18 turkeys, and a pileated woodpecker.

Don Schnurbusch adds:
Crew Mates,
Thank you to the brave souls who hiked on Saturday morning when the temperature was a brisk 4 degrees at game time, (what were they thinking?) Chef Ramsey treated us to grilled steak and noodles at Blackberry Hollow, man was that tasty! Andy wasn't able to join us, I understand it wasn't cold enough for him!

Operation Cleanstream Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

Operation Cleanstream
Meramec River, Walkers Ford to the Bluff
Ozark Outdoors, Leasburg, MO
August 13, 2017

Thanks to our Venture Crew, Scouts, their families and friends for participating in Operation Cleanstream at Ozark Outdoors. Thanks also to our guests, Stream Team veterans Debbie and Stacy for joining us. This year is special because it marks the 50th year anniversary of Operation Cleanstream, first started in 1967. This is the 8th consecutive year our scouts have covered the "Walkers Ford to Bluffs" section.

Over the last several years trash was becoming harder to find. This year was an exception though with more trash and tires collected than any previous year. This is probably contributed to the recent record Meramec floods of 2015 & 2017.

The float was very nice, the weather was very pleasant and the river very clear. Trash collected included a dishwasher, tractor tire, truck tire, 17 passenger car tires, car parts, barbed wire, a wagon, lawn chairs and several trash bags full of smaller debris. Unusual items found were a rodent skull and a Grateful Dead "Shakedown Street" road sign.

Thanks to Ozark Outdoors, Bear, Tera and their staff for coordinating the Upper Meramec Watershed for this great event! Thanks also for providing breakfast, canoes, equipment, shuttle service and trash disposal as well!

Thanks to Missouri Stream Team for providing the T-shirts, first aid kits, gloves, trash bags and a state-wide network of Stream Team volunteers.

And... Thanks to the Open Space Council for the leadership, financial support and coordination of their signature project!
Congratulations on 50 years of Operation Cleanstream!

Be sure to check out the float map, with a few of our favorite landmarks.

Annual New Year's Day Family Hike
Flint Quarry Trail
West Tyson County Park
January 1, 2017

Scouts, Venturers and their families enjoyed a great day for hiking while welcoming the new year.

The New Year's Day Family Hike was on the Flint Quarry Trail at West Tyson County Park near I-44 and the Meramec River in West St. Louis County. The Flint Quarry Trail is a 3.2 mile moderately difficult trail that varies between 500 and 800 feet of elevation as one climbs the Crescent Hills. The trail is named for the flint (chert) deposits which were once quarried by the Native Americans for use in weapons and other tools.

As a bonus, a pair of bald eagles were seen soaring in the clear blue sky above.

Thanks to everyone who attended. A good time was had by all!
