    Glassberg Conservation Area
    Jefferson County
    January 1, 2013

The New Year's Day Hike was held at the Myron and Sonya Glassberg Family Conservation Area in Northwest Jefferson County. This conservation area is new and has just recently become open to the public. The weather was cold with temperatures in the 20s and light snow on the ground, but typical for this time of year. We hiked about 2 miles from the trailhead at the parking lot to the bluff above the Meramec River and back. The trail gains about 250 feet of vertical elevation from the parking lot in the Labarque Creek valley to the ridge above the Meramec River. From the overlook we saw herds of deer in the fields across the river. Click on "Read More" below to view more photos of the hike.

    December 7-9, 2012

9 scouts and 7 adults camped at Beaumont Reservation over the weekend of December 7-9. The weather was mostly cloudy, wet at times with temps in the 40s and 50s, but not too bad for this time of year. During our check-in, the camp ranger told us that there was a surplus of fire wood available and encouraged its use. Therefore a comfortable campfire burned throughout the weekend. 15 scouts and 10 adults from Troop 161 assisted in packing 1,400+ boxes of donated food this year at the Mehlville Firehouse #5. The food will supply more than 500 pantries throughout our region with a three-month supply of non-perishable items. Thanks to all who donated food this year for those less fortunate. Thanks to all our scouts who participated and thanks to our adults John DiMercurio, Jim Hoffmann, Andy Sandroni, Don Schnurbusch, Marc Menteer, Matt Menteer, Darran and Karen Strebler, and Larry and Amy Cain. September 28-30, 2012

Scouts enjoyed close-up views of some of the most scenic and rugged areas Missouri has to offer.
We camped Friday and Saturday night on Taum Sauk Mountain. Saturday morning we hiked the Mina Sauk Falls Trail and a section on the Ozark Trail to The Devil's Tollgate. Saturday afternoon we took a side trip to Johnson Shut-Ins State Park. Sunday the troop attended mass at St. Marie Du Lac in Ironton.

The water sculpted igneous rhyolite rock at Johnson Shut-ins was formed over a billion years ago during the Precambrian era through a series of violent volcanic eruptions.
