Troop 161 had its fifth annual Pumpkin Fundraiser this year coordinated by the Kriegshauser Family. The weather was absolutely beautiful for the two day event. Troop 161 would like to thank the following: On Friday night Mr. Lamb stayed most of the night to make sure that our supplies of pumpkins stayed safe from any goblins and ghost.

On Saturday morning Mr. DiMercurio, Mr. and Mrs. Cain, Mr. and Mrs. Kriegshauser, Mr. and Mrs. Dlugos, Mrs. Ferretti, Mr. and Mrs. Strebler and the following scouts: Max (+ Gus & Adele), Brandon, Jonathan, Joe, and Alex S. set up our flies and pumpkins for selling. Several of our Scouts and parents helped out during both days. Thanks also to our St. Simon parishioners, and all those who stopped buy and helped support us by purchasing pumpkins.

On Saturday night special thanks to Nick and Larry Berron, Michael Neuhoff and Chris Cain for spending the night in our very own pumpkin patch, the boys used a fire pit, shared stories and protected our pumpkins from mischief and hi jinks……………… Preliminary numbers are in but we have made over $500.00 with a portion going to each scout's account that worked.

Thanks,
John D.

150th Year Anniversary of Battle of Pilot Knob Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

Troop News
Pilot Knob Battle Reenactment &
Taum Sauk Mountain Campout
September 26-28, 2014

Troop 161 had a great weekend in Pilot Knob, MO attending the Reenactment at Fort Davidson for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War Battle of Pilot Knob. Friday night the Troop arrived around 7:30 pm and Mr. Menteer had most of our campsite already assembled. The evening was very nice low 60’s as we sat around the campfire and looked Northward at the many stars that lit the evening.

We woke up around 7:00 am and began cooking breakfast. A HUGE shout out goes to Mrs. Butler and her hens who provided us 4 dozen fresh eggs from her chicken coop………………they were delicious as we used them to prepare one of Troops 161 favorite breakfast dishes; Shipwreck. Right before we began to devour our breakfast Mr. Cain drove down for the weekend and joined us………………….as you may recall his brother Paul Cain was involved as one of the Union Soldiers who was part of the Missouri 8th infantry.

Once we finished breakfast we began our trip to Pilot Knob: those who were in attendance: Mr. DiMercurio, Mr. Cain, Mr. Menteer, Mr. Kriegshauser, Max. K., Daniel B., Jon F., Alan S., Andrew S., and Brandon D.

As we made our way around the State Historic Site we were pleasantly greeted by General Sterling Price of the Confederate Army; General Price described to us why and what happened during the battle of Pilot Knob; many of the confederate soldiers had nothing but the clothes on their back, many without shoes and waiting till their comrades or a Union soldier was killed or injured to take the supplies off their bodies and begin to fight.

At 1:00pm the Battle of Pilot Knob began, and for about two hours the reenactment showed the bloody battle and how close the Confederates were to seizing Fort Davidson; thousands died during that battle and a mass grave was formed and still is there honoring those who lost their lives during this battle.

After the battle the boys and leaders went to the vendor tents where they saw many of the uniforms and equipment that the solders used; they even sampled and drank homemade Root beer, which seemed to be a hit.

We learned about many of the struggles that both the Union and Confederate armies had to face such as battle wounds, hunger, and uncertainty of whether they would live or die. We got to see firsthand how these soldiers lived in canvas tents, sleeping on straw to stay warm, but all proud and brave to fight for their common causes.
The Troop attended 5:30 pm mass at St. Marie Du Lac in Ironton, MO; it was nice to be recognized by the attending priest and congregation. We then returned to camp and prepared dinner that consisted of BBQ chicken breast, BBQ beans, salad, and mac’ n cheese. After dinner, the troop sat around the fire and recalled many of the cool things we saw that day.

On Sunday the Troop arose around 7:00am and began to break down camp, after breakfast a patrol line was formed to make sure the area was left as we found it; following the Leave No Trace policy.

Camp Famous Eagle
S-F Ranch
June 8th - 14th, 2014

What a great Scout camp and I want to thank the following for their hard work, dedication and contributions: Billy Lamb, Brad Sadl, Ken Boning, Jim Hoffmann, Ned Kriegshauser, Matt Shively, Ed Blittschau, and the parents who allowed us to have a fun week with your boys and hopefully made them a bit wiser.

Congratulations to our new OA members: Ken Boning, Jon F., Nick W., Nathan B., and Luke G.; remember you have to attend the Fall OA reunion to complete Ordeal and begin your journey towards Brotherhood.

To our Voyagers: Andrew S., Jacob B., Brandon D., and Daniel B., you young men rocked and though each and every one of you demonstrated youth beyond your years, a hats off to Brandon who went from beginner swimmer to a full-fledged swimmer.

The older Scouts: David B., Nick B., Michael N., Ryan D., and Conner G. thanks for being an invaluable source of experience and leading by example it’s a direct result from the many years our great leadership from our present and past leaders you represent our Troop in fine fashion.

All of our Scouts, young and old proved and showed the many leaders, and Scouts during the week we were there nothing short of professionalism, pride, and tremendous respect to the staff, other troops, and leaders what Troop 161 is all about. I saw during the week how our young men interacted with one another, worked with the younger Scouts and helped them earn rank advancement, watched out for them, provided guidance, and led by example.

I also want to acknowledge and congratulate Joe H. and Rory B.; our two wild men who took the challenge and set off for a week of Ranger Camp; in true fashion they returned on Friday afternoon with many battle scars, didn’t shower, and many excellent stories during their week at the Ranch.

We have a fine tradition dating back to 1959 when our Scouting program began and because of the true dedication of both past and present leaders we continue to produce many Eagle Scouts and that is a direct result of our leadership, program and dedication we provide to our troop. Over the past several years we have and continue to prove that by the number of Eagle Scouts that have completed that trek; though they were not there this past Summer Camp I want to thank Marc Menteer, Larry Cain, Andy Sandroni, Don Schnurbusch, Darren Strebler, and Amy Cain for their love, dedication and commitment. Though you were not there physically your presence was felt.

Thanks;

John P. DiMercurio
