    Pumpkin Sale
    October 19-20, 2013

Story submitted by Mrs. Amy Cain

We had a beautiful weekend for our Pumpkin Sale. After the rain on Friday night (and the Cardinal win!), Saturday brought sun and a lot of wind. We had a lot of help setting up all our equipment and setting out the pumpkins. We weighed the pumpkins and sorted them by their weight. We had small pumpkins (weight 6-10 pounds), medium pumpkins (weight 11-14 pounds) and large pumpkins (weight 15-20 pounds). In addition, we had some Spookys (pie pumpkins), decorative gourds and mini-mini pumpkins. And this year we had hand made dish rags, donated by Ben B's grandmother, in wonderful fall colors and even a few pink ones for Breast Cancer Awareness. Sales on Saturday were slow in part because there were no weekend soccer games so the traffic in and out of St. Simon was very light. We had a few visitors who took advantage of our "campfire" to sit and chat for a spell. Thanks to Mr. Lamb for protecting the pumpkins from any ghosts or ghouls on Friday night and Mr. Menteer, Mr. Shively and Mr. Cain for sleeping out with the stars and pumpkins on Saturday night. Our sales were a little more brisk on Sunday after the masses but we still ended up with a bin and a half of pumpkins at the end of our sale. A special Thank You to the Strebler family, especially Mrs. Strebler, for taking the pumpkins home and their tireless efforts to find homes for all our unadopted pumpkins. As of the following Friday, all but 12 of the pumpkins were snug as a bug in their new homes. Thank you to all the scouts and their parents for all their help with our sale. I would also like to give a shout out to our pumpkin supplier, Mr. Jim Schneider, who not only gave us the mini-mini pumpkins and gourds for free but called on Saturday to make sure the pumpkins were what we wanted and to see how our sales were going.

Scouts were joined this weekend by Pack 161's Webelo II patrol. The weekend weather was mostly clear but included a Saturday morning thunderstorm and light rain from about 6:30 to 7:00am. Low temperatures Saturday night dipped into the 40s, typical for October weather. After setting up tents the Webelos participated in rope making, fire building, soccer, wiffle ball and also spent time playing in the creek.

Thanks to all the dads that attended. Thanks to Mr. Strebler and Alex for towing the trailer. Thanks to Mrs. Cain for helping with the food shopping. Huge thanks to Mr. Moleski for providing the 12 racks of smoked ribs!! Dinner Saturday night had to be the best ever, which included ribs, corn on the cob, bbq beans, applesauce and bread. In the evening scouts also enjoyed s'mores around the campfire. Click on "Read More" below to view more photos from the fall campout.

Troop 161 arrived at the OA Fall Reunion at S bar F Friday evening about 6:00pm. We began the evening by setting up camp and preparing for the next day. Sean L. Eric O. Max K. Ben B. and Allen S. attended the event.

Saturday: Our OA candidates (Sean L. Eric O. Ben B.) began the day at around 6:30 am preparing to meet around 1000 OA candidates to perform their cheerful service project in order to receive their rank of Ordeal. Max K. and Allen S. were elangomats and led a group of OA candidates to complete one of their requirements for Brotherhood.

Their job was to clear brush, rake leaves, trim trees, and remove trash from several areas at S-F. It was a very hot day. The temperature was around 98 degrees. The scouts worked very hard and achieved their goal of cleaning and removing a large amount of debris from their assigned area.

Max K., and Allen, S. who were in charge of another team were responsible to clean and remove trash and debris from a fence line that collapsed and needed to be cleared and fixed. The boys worked hard during the day and completed about a mile of the fence line.

Thomas's Eagle project was held on August 10, 2013. The scope of Thomas's project was to improve and elevate an existing stone walkway from the parking area to the facility's main entrance. Scouts removed existing stepping stones from the walkway, then elevated the area with 6 tons of crushed limestone. The old stepping stones were reset on the elevated foundation and new stones were added as well to increase the width of the walkway. An additional 3 tons of crushed limestone was applied to the driveway at the caretaker's residence. (Click on "Read More" below to view more photos.)
